First printing of the first edition, with presumed first issue dust jacket. Printed in the USA by the University of California Press in August 1940. Beige linen-like tweed buckram binding, with crisp gilt-stamped lettering over a balck blaze to the front board and to the spine. Exceptionally clean and attractive binding. Unbumped spine head and tail, with very minor bumping to the upper corners. 10.5 x 7 inches. Text block firmly bound in. With xviii and 170 numbered pages, and with 34 B&W illustrations, some full page. Just a hint of age-toning to the outer edges of the pages. Else an exceptionally clean copy, and rather tight. Gently read. No remainder marks. With a plain paper dust jacket, not price-clipped. Handsome red- and black-stamped lettering to the DJ. The DJ now age-faded, with the spine evenly sun-toned, with very light soiling and with a bit of rubbing, and with moderate chipping at the spine head and tail. Previous owner name in neat ink hand to the front flap ofthe DJ. DJ in a new, clear Mylar over-wrapper. A Near Fine copy in a Good Plus DJ. With comments on the invention of typography, the first types, legibility and fine printing.
